One of Sri Lanka's smallest but most beloved parks, centred on the Lahugala Kitulana tank right on our doorstep. On a good evening you'll see fifty to a hundred wild elephants wading in the reeds and grazing along the water — sometimes many more.
The park is open for jeep safaris, but for a first taste you can often see elephants right from the A4 as you drive west out of the village late in the afternoon. A short evening safari from Liya's Kitchen is the easiest way to get inside the park properly — ask us and we'll arrange the jeep and driver.
Best visited from about 3pm until dusk. Dry season (May to October) tends to bring the largest herds down to the water.
